What Is Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC®?
4MATIC® is the branding used by Mercedes-Benz for the all-wheel drive systems on all of the vehicles where it’s available. The name actually covers a few different types of AWD systems. For example, the systems in SUVs differ from those in sedans and coupes, in that SUVs have a 50/50 front/rear power distribution, while Mercedes-Benz cars use a rear-biased 45/55 setup for sportier handling. There are also systems that can be deactivated and revert to two-wheel drive with the push of a button, in order to conserve fuel when driving conditions are generally favorable, although they will often reactivate automatically if wheels start to slip. Then there are permanent systems that don’t deactivate, this includes (but is not limited to) electric models with 4MATIC® and the G-Class. The G-Class further differentiates itself with three locking differentials, a nod to the military vehicle origins of the model. This system is by far the most favorable for off-road driving.
