About the Mercedes-Benz GLS
The GLS is the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz SUV fleet, the ultimate in luxury and driving refinement. The spacious interior can seat 7 in unrivaled luxury while either of the available engines pushes you along with a minimum of effort. All-wheel drive comes standard and it imbues the GLS with incredible handling both on and off the road. Standard air suspension makes for an even more comfortable ride while the 4-zone automatic climate control and standard heated and ventilated front seats ensure that you enjoy the exact temperature you prefer. Thanks to the standard panoramic roof, the cabin feels open and airy in the day and the 64-color LED ambient lighting sets the mood when it’s dark out. The Mercedes-Benz GLS is the vehicle for when you need seating for your friends and family but refuse to compromise on luxury.
What the Critics Say
The GLS is so refined on the road, its off-road capability is a surprising and welcome trait. Mercedes has made sure it's able to tackle more obstacles than most buyers could dream of taking on. The air suspension can raise for more ground clearance, there are clever all-wheel-drive features to help keep things going in the right direction, and there's even available underbody protection to shield the GLS's sensitive bits when navigating over rocks and ruts. On the road, the GLS's agility and comfortable ride are its most satisfying characteristics.” — Car & Driver
The Mercedes-Benz GLS is luxury writ large. Mercedes-Benz was one of the pioneers of the grand experiment of the luxury SUV, and the flagship GLS translates the experience of the iconic S-Class into SUV form. It has the top-notch interior quality and satisfying driving manners you’d expect from the brand, plus the convenience of 3-row seating and adventurous off-road capabilities.” — Kelley Blue Book
What’s New For 2026
Only subtle updates have been made to the Mercedes-Benz GLS for the 2026 model year. In fact, the sole change involves all-new GLS 450 4MATIC® MANUFAKTUR Editions. These bespoke models are available with your choice of MANUFAKTUR Silicon Grey and MANUFAKTUR Moonlight White Magno exterior paints.
Mercedes-Benz GLS SUV Features
Uncompromising Luxury
As the flagship of the Mercedes SUV lineup, the GLS is built to showcase just how luxurious an SUV can be when you pull out all the stops. The interior highlights one of the things Mercedes-Benz does extremely well which is to blend traditional luxury with modern and high-tech elements. As a result, you’ll enjoy upscale optional amenities including heated and ventilated front seats along with authentic leather upholstery. The standard stereo is a Burmester® 13-speaker, 590-watt system which adds Dolby Atmos® technology to create a three-dimensional sound field that makes whatever you’re listening to sound incredible. A 1,610-watt, 29-speaker version is available as well so the really dedicated audiophiles don’t have to make compromises either. Optional equipment includes things like heated and cooled cupholders, heated armrests, soft-close doors, and extraordinarily supple and smooth Nappa leather upholstery.
Effortlessly Capable
The Mercedes-Benz GLS comes with a standard 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that is mated to a mild hybrid system and a 9-speed automatic transmission. The 375 horsepower and 367 lb-ft of torque it produces is enough to be plenty peppy but for some extra muscle, there is a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 available. This also comes with a mild hybrid system and a 9-speed transmission but the power output is noticeably increased to 510 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. Both options come with 4MATIC® all-wheel drive as well as an air suspension system to soak up bumps so you’ll never know they were there at all. Although many luxury SUVs aren’t built to go off-road at all, the GLS stands out as being especially capable with available underbody protection and height-adjustable air suspension. There is even a “Transparent Hood” feature which uses underbody cameras to display on the dash any obstacles immediately in front of your wheels that would otherwise be out of your field of vision.
Cutting-Edge Technology
Mercedes-Benz has used advanced technology to create a truly immersive experience inside the GLS. For all the reserved and sophisticated styling, the GLS still has a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia display as well as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display complete with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto support along with wireless charging and NFC pairing. A two-way In-car Communication (ICC) System makes it easier for the driver or front-seat passenger to communicate with the third row of seats, allowing everyone to speak at a normal volume and not strain their voices shouting. The safety technology in the GLS is impressive as well and the safety tech that comes standard on the GLS is too extensive to list here. Some highlights that you either won’t find on competitors or at least won’t find as standard include Active Lane Change Assist, Crosswind Assist, Active Stop-and-Go Assist, and Adaptive braking technology.
