Mercedes-Benz E-Class Earns Top Safety Pick+ Award
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has joined the ranks of the ML-Class, being the second Mercedes-Benz to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ award.
The IIHS reports that the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class earned a “Good” rating in all categories, including the front small-overlap test, as well as moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint crash tests. Models equipped with the available forward collision warning system including the optional automatic braking earn a “Superior” rating.
For 2014, the criteria for the IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ were revised. Vehicles must now receive a minimum rating of “Good” in all basic categories except the front small-overlap test, in which “Acceptable” is the minimum requirement. For the highest accolade of Top Safety Pick+, vehicles must have an available front collision warning system. The new rigorous standards have been tough to meet, with even Toyota and Honda making updates in order to pass the tests.
