First up we have two of the more popular models from each brand, both midsize SUV offerings, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and the Volvo XC60. The GLC has a bit of a price advantage, which is just the first of several advantages. Both vehicles come with a 2.0-liter engine mated to a mild hybrid system and all-wheel drive. But the engine in the GLC makes more power, and that means it’s a bit quicker as well. That’s all the more impressive when you consider that the GLC also gets better fuel economy. In most cases, power and fuel economy are a bit of a tradeoff, but when a vehicle has both, it’s a pretty clear choice. Some of this is due to a more advanced engine, but the GLC also has a more advanced 9-speed transmission to go with it, which certainly helps.
While Volvo is classified as a luxury brand, the differences in equipment between these two vehicles show that the Swedish brand might not be taking that status quite as seriously. This is evident in things like the speed-sensitive steering and the steering wheel adjustments, but it’s especially evident in the infotainment system, where Volvo lags behind even mainstream non-luxury brands. Volvo hasn’t updated these systems in a while, and the smaller screen and wired-only Apple CarPlay connection demonstrate that.
Much of the excellent record that Mercedes-Benz enjoys for safety comes from where you expect, a high level of build quality, according to the IIHS report. But Mercedes-Benz also boasts an impressive range of crash mitigation technology, including things like Crosswind Assist, Car-to-X Communication, and an LED Intelligent Light System with Ultra Wide Highbeams, as well as all of the more mainstream tech that you see with other brands.
