Mercedes-Benz vs. BMW Comparison Page
Mercedes-Benz and BMW are two of the oldest and most storied brands in the automotive world. The two luxury automakers have developed something of a rivalry as a result and that rivalry has evolved over the years and taken many forms. Today, it includes extensive model lineups complete with the latest and most advanced electric models. But all of this might make it difficult to choose between the two when shopping, so we figured that a comparison might make things easier.

Up first we have each company’s flagship all-electric sedan. Performance versions of each exist, but we’ve chosen the top mainstream trims since these are meant to be luxury sedans first and foremost. Pricing is nearly identical which is rare in this segment. But the differences start to emerge when you look at the power offered by each. Horsepower numbers are pretty similar but the EQS offers quite a lot more torque, an important thing to have in a large sedan, hence the quicker 0-60 time. There is also a big difference in range and while the i7’s range isn’t terrible, there is still a clear advantage to the EQS. Some of this is due to the slightly bigger battery in the EQS but if you look at the MPGe numbers, it’s also just a more efficient vehicle. This is even more impressive due to the fact that it’s putting out a lot more torque. The EQS is clearly using a more advanced drivetrain and this is an important factor to consider.
The difference in wheel size isn’t huge but it’s listed as high up the chart as it is for a good reason. Large sedan buyers tend to like larger wheels since they look better in the larger wheel wells but the 20-inch wheels on the i7 come with the downside of limiting range. You can squeeze another 19 miles of range out of the BMW by selecting 19-inch wheels but if you want even better range from even bigger wheels, the EQS is how you get it. The EQS also comes with a roomier front seat for superior comfort. On the tech front, the BMW i7 offers a good-sized instrument cluster screen and infotainment touchscreen in what has become a pretty standard setup. The EQS shakes things up a bit, with the Mercedes-Benz-exclusive Hyperscreen, a 56-inch display that spans the entire dash and offers controls for the passenger as well as the driver. It even allows for augmented reality navigation, overlaying driving directions over a live video feed of what is in front of the car. In all, as impressive as the i7 is, the EQS is just a bigger technological step forward.

Up next we have a much more mainstream comparison. These midsize SUVs are both powered by 3.0-liter inline-6 engines that produce 375 horsepower. Both hold 5 passengers as well but we start to see the differences in the optional third row of seats available for the GLE. This is possible because there is a lot more space in the GLE, both for cargo and also for backseat passengers. And even though these two vehicles might produce the same horsepower, the stopping power in the GLE is superior thanks to the bigger brake rotors on both the front and rear wheels.
The GLE has a price advantage over the X6 which is appealing but becomes even more relevant when you consider what that money gets you. Active Park Assist will set you back an additional $900 on the X6 but comes standard on the GLE 450. In addition to better standard equipment, the GLE is also offered with better optional equipment including things like heated and cooled cup holders and augmented reality navigation.
Mercedes-Benz Exclusives
Some of the most impressive parts of the Mercedes-Benz lineup are models that don’t have a BMW equivalent. And in some cases, they don’t have an equivalent from any manufacturer. This includes vehicles like the G-Class, a luxury offroader with the bones of a rugged military vehicle, not something you’ll find in a BMW dealership. Mercedes-Benz is also one of the last manufacturers to offer a wagon model and the E-Class Wagon is an excellent example of the genre. BMW does have one dedicated sports car model, the Z4, which is available with either a 4-cylinder or 6-cylinder engine. That’s great, but it doesn’t compare to the V8-powered Mercedes-AMG® GT. Available with 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, that’s more than enough to reduce the Z4 to nothing but a little speck in your rearview mirror.
Lastly, there is the whole Mercedes-Maybach range of ultra-luxury vehicles. These vehicles take luxury to a whole new level, like nothing in the BMW lineup. Engineered using only the finest materials, hand-crafted by experts to meet the bespoke needs of Maybach clientele, these vehicles are beyond compare.
Winner — Mercedes-Benz
BMW has a solid lineup of mainstream luxury vehicles, a good effort, but not one that quite measures up to the offerings from Mercedes-Benz. The advanced technology, luxury, and performance that you get with Mercedes-Benz sets a whole new bar for the entire segment and competitors like BMW are just playing catch-up. So let Mercedes-Benz of Easton show you just how impressive a Mercedes-Benz vehicle can be.
