Mercedes-Benz Unveils New Models At The 2016 Detroit Auto Show
Mercedes-Benz did not disappoint attendees at the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit as the world’s premier automaker debuted several astonishing new vehicles to an awe-struck audience of international automotive journalists. The two most significant reveals at the show were the new 2017 AMG S65 Cabriolet and the new 2017 E-Class.
With some auto industry pundits calling it “…perhaps the most beautiful convertible on the market…” the breathtaking new 2017 AMG S65 Cabriolet rolled into the spotlight. The stunning new droptop’s 6.0-liter, twin turbo V12 engine is rated at a phenomenal 621 horsepower, generating a mind-bending 738 lb.-ft. of prodigious torque. The engine is said to be able to rocket the new S65 Cabriolet from zero to 60 mph in a mere 4 seconds.
According to Jens Meiners of Car And Driver Magazine, the AMG S65 debuts with a unique look all its own to help separate it from its sibling, the AMG S63 Cabriolet. “To distinguish the AMG S65 from its lesser siblings, it has been ladled with chrome,” states Meiners. “The twin-blade grille, the so-called lower A-wing, and the front splitter are all executed in the high-gloss material. The mesh in the grille and the air intake is finished in chrome, as well. The S65 gets its own exclusive 20-inch wheel design, which Mercedes asserts ‘appears larger than its actual dimensions.'”
Regarding the S65’s stunning interior, Meiners writes, “Beneath the microfiber-lined three-layer fabric top (available in black, beige, dark blue, or dark red), the S65 boasts a full leather interior, with diamond-pattern stitching on the seats and Nappa cowhide even on the sun visors and the A-pillars.” He adds that “Mercedes’ standard Airscarf (neck-level warm-air outlets), heated armrests, and Aircap wind deflector work to keep occupants comfortable with the roof stowed – a process that takes 17 seconds.”
A Masterpiece Of Intelligence
Daimler followed up with the superstar reveal of its all-new 10th generation E-Class. Laden with the latest high-tech wonders, the E-Class sedans are “the center of gravity of the Mercedes brand,” according to the Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz automobiles, Dr. Dieter Zetsche. Dr. Thomas Weber, head of Mercedes’ research and car-development division, lauded the new E-Class’s groundbreaking technology, stating that “…the driver-assistive package gives us the opportunity to go semi-autonomous.” And Gorden Wagener, Vice-President of Design for Daimler AG stated that the E-Class “has perfect proportions, perfect rear-wheel drive as good as it gets. It has a long hood and a neat, flowing silhouette…”
Marty Padgett with TheCarConnection.com calls the new E-Class interior “…gorgeous, with a sweep of metallic trim punctuated by round vents, and wide high-resolution screens that make up the gauges and infotainment display. Both the steering wheel and the center console have touch-sensitive controls to run audio, phone, navigation, and more.”
Ola Källenius, head of Mercedes’ Marketing & Sales stated that the new E-Class is “a masterpiece of intelligence,” adding that “…it’s the most intelligent car in the business limousine segment. It brings so much more technology wrapped in a beautiful package.”
Marty Padgett agrees, saying, “…the most important E-Class features pave the road to truly autonomous driving. The E-Class can now cruise, stop, and accelerate to follow the car ahead at speeds of up to 130 mph; it can steer itself into and out of lane changes, and it can apply the brakes when it senses danger in crossing traffic.”
Reporting from the Mercedes booth at the show, Padgett states that “The E-Class also marks the debut of a new infotainment system, and of hardware that let it communicate with other cars in order to avoid accidents. Finally, E-Class drivers will be able–via a smartphone app–to park and fetch their car out of tight spaces without even getting into it.”
The new E-Class is powered by a 2.0-liter 241-hp, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. A global design team took 48 months to create the new lightweight E-Class, and it’s said that a new plug-in hybrid model will also be offered.
Mercedes also introduced its new SLC and SLC 43 convertibles, as well as a new Smart for two convertible cabriolet model that “allows for a more compact way to enjoy the sun.”
