The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been around since 1979, and in the years since it was introduced, it retained much the same look as the original military vehicle, as well as the impressive offroad prowess that is required for military service. What’s New for 2025
The G 580 is both completely new for 2025 and also an evolution of an existing design. The G 580 shares an interior with the conventional G-Class, and the bodywork is mostly the same. The grille is the key to spotting the difference between the two versions, as the G 580 has a more aerodynamic version, thanks to the lack of a radiator. The bodywork for all G-Class versions has been tweaked for 2025 as well, and the headlights and A-pillars are also more aerodynamic now.

An EV For Offroad
There are plenty of electric SUVs on the market, but none of them come close to the G 580 in terms of offroad ability. The G 580 employs four separate electric motors, one for each wheel, mounted close to the wheel for even weight distribution. These motors are able to be independently controlled, metering out power according to the level of grip. This makes for incredible offroad ability, more than worthy of the G-Class legacy, and unique among EVs. Giving it a bit more ability is the 9.8 inches of ground clearance, as well as 35 degrees of lateral stability, and a fording of 33.5 inches. The motors put out a combined 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, which allows for some incredible performance on or off the road.
Luxury Interior
Most of the really capable offroad vehicles are pretty utilitarian, and while luxury offroaders do exist, most of them come with some kind of compromise in either capability or luxury. What has always set the G-Class apart is the complete lack of compromise, it manages to be a superb example of both at the same time. This is every bit as true of the G 580 as it is of the conventional version. You get the same Burmester® 3D Surround Sound system, and the same 64-color ambient lighting. In fact, the interior of the G 580 is indistinguishable from the one that has made the G-Class a luxury icon for years. Things like the available Multicontour® seats make for an incredibly comfortable place to sit, and the fact that you can enjoy all of this while climbing over rocks or splashing in the mud just makes it all the more incredible.
Iconic Design
There are other luxury SUVs available for sale, but there’s a reason why the G-Class is popular even with people who never take them offroad. It’s the same reason why the G-Class design has changed so little since 1979, it has presence. The G-Class was originally designed as a military vehicle, but unlike the Defender, Wrangler, or Hummer, it wasn’t watered down for the civilian version. The interior might be supremely luxurious, and there might be things like LED exterior lighting, but the design and proportions still exude the same undeniable sense of purpose as the original. The G-Class is also incredibly customizable, with a range of paint colors and wheel designs that are massive, even when compared to the impressive range offered by other Mercedes-Benz models. After all, the G 580 will definitely announce that you’ve arrived, but it should be how to you how to say it.
